/ˈkɛni/ (say 'kenee)

1. Elizabeth, 1886–1952, Australian nurse; noted for her unorthodox treatment of poliomyelitis.
2. Enda, born 1951, Irish Fine Gael politician; became prime minister in 2011.
3. Grant Hayden, born 1963, Australian Olympic canoeist and surfing ironman champion.
4. Yvonne Denise, born 1951, Australian soprano opera singer.
Elizabeth Kenny devised her method of treating poliomyelitis while working as a nurse in rural NSW and Qld. In 1932, during a polio epidemic, she established a clinic at Townsville to treat victims. At the time there was no vaccine for the disease, and Kenny's treatments were radically different to those favoured by the medical profession, as were her views on pathology. Condemned by the Qld medical profession, in 1937 she travelled to England where she treated patients. In 1940 she went to the Mayo Clinic in the US, and her methods became widely accepted. The Sister Kenny Institute was built in Minneapolis in 1942.
Yvonne Kenny was born in Sydney. She studied chemistry before pursuing a singing career. In 1972 she won a scholarship for a year's study at La Scala, Milan, and moved to England, where she has been based since. She made her debut at Covent Garden as Barena in Genusa and has sung at most of the major world opera houses. Her roles for the Australian Opera have included the title role in Alcina and Cleopatra in Julius Caesar. She was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 1989.
